“Invest in people who you know will feed you just as much goodness as you do them”
June 8th 2019, was definitely not my regular Saturday! I got together with my closest friends to celebrate my departure to the new place I’d call home. I actually thought my friends would have thrown me a surprise farewell party but after weeks of realizing it won’t happen, I decided to host my own 🤷🏾♀️. The theme was ‘Bon Voyage!’ a French expression often used to wish someone well on their journey. I made a DIY Photo Booth as the party took place at my home. In true ‘Shae style’, I ordered French-themed cupcakes and created fun games that we could play. I wanted to enjoy my favorite Trini dish before leaving so curry crab and dumplings was on the menu.
11 friends all in the same room?! Guaranteed madness to take place! The games were the highlight of the evening as all four teams were quite competitive. This was mostly due to the many prizes that could be won. Each player was given a name tag with a French name and must be called by this name throughout the night. If called by their actual name, then the player receives a point. Other games included:
- Pin the flag on my city
- Doh Say Dat (Trini Taboo)
- How much do I weigh? – guess the suitcase weight
- Pack this Carry-on
- What do you think? – a questionnaire about my move
‘What Do You Think?’ was my favorite game as it really gave insight as to how my friends felt about my new journey. Just look at the responses🙈:
Question: ‘What expectations do you have of me?
“Go out there and do your best. Come back with an excellent report and get new experiences. Remain genuine & true”
“For you to find happiness & a husband; Wishing you excel in your studies”
“Nothing but success”
“To be extremely successful in all your endeavours and find a French man”
Let’s just say, not all my friends had the right intentions! Haha! 😂
The night ended bittersweet with happy and sad tears as everyone gave heartfelt speeches to wish me luck on this adventure.
I’m so thankful to have these amazing people in my life and I wouldn’t trade them for the world! ❤️
